2nd Degree BJJ Black Belt

I was honoured to get my 2nd degree BJJ black Belt stripes from Fabio Gurgel in Las Vegas last week at the Alliance JIu-Jitsu Team conference .

I earned my BJJ Black Belt in Nov. 02, 2014 from Master Marcus Soares. Fun fact Master Soares was just given the great honour to be promoted to BJJ Red Belt just a couple of weeks ago. They’re only maybe a few dozen BJJ Red Belts alive in the whole world. Such a great honour!

Thank you for all the kind words and everyone who has supported me over the years.

13 x World Jiu-JItsu Champions Team

13 x World Champions Team. Alliance has done it again! For a historic 13th time Alliance has won the World CHampions as a team. No other team in the world has come close to this feat. They’re are over 300 Alliance academies around the world but we are far from the biggest team.

Alliance attributes this success from the methodology of teaching that all of our academies follow. This makes learning more efficient, easier and more fun.

Congratulations to all the competitors and coaches!

Professor Sean Wins the 2020 Community Sports Hero Award for Coaching

I’m honoured and excited to to find out I won the 2020 Community Sports Hero Award for coaching from PacificSports Okanagan.

Check out this touching write-up PacificSports did for me:

Sean has been a tremendous contributor to not just the martial arts community, but to the physical literacy community in the central interior, showing great resiliency and a true community sport leader. When his club was restricted due to the Provincial Health Orders, Sean went out of his way to draw attention to other quality local businesses who were struggling, and used his social media presence to support them.

He is viewed by the school and local regional multi sport community as a great coach and mentor to youth. In the words of one of his own athletes, “he has built a place that has accommodated an awesome community that I've grown to love. Sean made an invaluable contribution to the community because he kept it going and amidst all this turmoil with COVID and the shutdown he created a Whatsapp group, used social media, found ways to keep the training and the motivation going throughout this year for families.”

Sean is well-loved in both the school, sport camp, and martial arts world, and has worked incredibly hard to stay positive in light of adversity. COVID 19 has dealt a challenging blow to the martial arts community, and Sean’s ingenuity and sense of family was so appreciated by the athletes and families who had customarily come to rely on his leadership and sense of humour. “Sean has created a community for us. I get to watch myself and my kids learn the art of Jiu Jitsu. As well as learning how to be a better person, and that all happens through the respect and leadership that Sean brings to the gym.”

For his tenacity, caring leadership, and respect for participants both in and outside the martial arts, we recognize Sean McHugh as one of our valued Community Sport Heroes in 2020.

Covid-19 Group Class Closures Update

All group classes are still closed since November. The BC Health Board closed all martial arts and Intense Fitness classes in British Columbia. On February 5th we are suppose to hear from the BC Health Board if we can reopen. If we can reopen the group classes it will be in what they call Phase 2.5. This will have stricter protocols than when we we reopened in July from the first shut down. If all goes well in March we can go back to Phase 3 which is lighter restrictions in class.

People testing positive in BC has dropped significantly since December so we are going in the right direction.

We wish everyone the best and to follow government recommended protocols and we will all get back to some sort of normalcy soon.

Best wishes,
Sean McHugh
